Rift Quests: New In-Game Video Recording

Document your Rift Quests?! Trion has announced that the Patch 1.1 Upgrade for Rift includes the ability to make short three-minute video clips while in the game. The videos will be automatically uploaded to YouTube. Here is Trion’s announcement on the Rift forums:

***************
The Invasion Will be Televised!
We’ve heard you asking for it and now it’s here! Patch 1.1 brings the ability to capture video and upload it straight to YouTube from in-game! No more messing with third party programs, or wasting hours waiting for your videos to process – you can do it all from the RIFT interface.
Just follow these easy steps to get started:

•Log into RIFT on the character you would like to use for your video
•Hit “ESC” to open the Main Menu, go to “Settings” -> “Video” -> “Record Video.”
•Click the “Login” button and enter your YouTube credentials
It should look something like this:
YT_1.jpg

Once you’re logged in, just type “/record” or hit “CTRL+Y” to start recording . You’ll see a little red icon by the mini-map to let you know you’re doin’ it right (mousing over the icon will let you see the name of the clip, and how long you’ve been recording).

YT_2.jpg

To stop recording, just type “/record” or “CTRL+Y” one more time and the red icon will change to blue to let you know that it’s being encoded.

YT_3.jpg

When your video has been encoded, the blue icon will be replaced by a check mark, which you can click to name the clip and send it to your YouTube channel.

YT_4.jpg

Whether it’s invasions, boss fights, or just your avatar struttin’ their stuff on the /dance floor, get out there and start filming your character’s adventures in Telara!

Also, we’d love to have you share your videos with us, so be sure to upload or link them to the RIFT page on Facebook, or tweet them to us (@RIFTGame) with the hashtag #RIFTVid – we’ll be reposting and retweeting some of our favorites.

We can’t wait to see your RIFT videos!

Rift Quests: How Does the Coin Lock Work?

Rift Quests Coin Lock Symbol on the InterfaceWhile you are about to log in and do some Rift quests, you suddenly see that you have been coin locked! Yikes. How fast does the email come from Trion? Is the coin lock a pain in the arse? Will this slow down my play time? Is this the end of the world!? :::shaking hands to the sky:::

So, we did a bit of an experiment to see if the coin lock in the Rift Mmoprg was a pain or not. We, through the power of IP juggling, switched up our address in order to send Rift into convulsions and make it think we were logging in from some far-away location.

Fired up the game and then we began the timer.

First, when we logged into the character screen we saw the glowing red-and-gold coin lock symbol. You can see it in the picture above. It just required a mouse click on the symbol on the user-interface. The pop-up screen that followed read something about “doom and gloom and discourteous companions” (no not really) and to check our Email for the code to type in.

Then, we switched screens and opened up the Email. With that switching taking less than a few minutes, there was already the note from Trion in our “Rift Game” file. We opened up the email, read the code and switched back to the game UI. Entered the code, hit the button and poof, we were live again. You get a little confirmation note in the chat box that reads:

rift quests coin lock how to do it

So, for us, the coin lock is easy to use and fast- under three minutes. Even if the Email does not come to your computer right away, there is an option in the dialogue box to have the code resent. The delay was minimal with just minutes really and did not effect our game time grinding and questing. Yeah, it will not solve every problem of account security for an online game, but it is a start and we congrats on Trion for taking some action.

It’s on to the Rift quests, cowboy.

Rift Quests: Coin Lock System Announcement

Over on the Rift Forum- the Devs have posted this announcement. We plan to try out this system (IP magic) and see how fast it plays out. We’ll report back soon.

************************

Hi everyone,

If you have been reading the forums it’s hard to miss the many discussions on compromised or “hacked” accounts. We have been investigating the causes and individuals behind these attacks and, as mentioned previously, are taking steps to protect you against them.

One step we are taking is implementing the “Coin Lock” feature tomorrow (3/17/11). This feature is automatically enabled should your account be logged in from a significantly different location or computer and prevents unauthorized individuals from selling your items and money.

Should you log in from a location that enables Coin Lock on your account you will be able to easily disable it via a code that is automatically sent to your email. Simply copy the code, locate the “Coin Lock” icon above your Hot Bars and enter it when requested. For more details on coin lock please see the full announcement: Update on Hacked Accounts. We’re also happy to say that, starting tomorrow (3/17/11), reporting mail spam will ignore the user and individuals on your ignore list will no longer be able to send you mail, thanks for your feedback on this issue.

While only a small fraction of our players have had their accounts compromised they are our highest priority and we know the frustration and confusion it can cause when it happens to you. As we have seen in other games, those responsible for these attacks will always be driven to do so as long as selling game currency, items, and characters remains profitable.

These individuals and groups have been accumulating account and email information spanning across the industry for as long as there has been one and their efforts continue to become more coordinated. As such it is very important that the password you use to access RIFT is unique and, most importantly, not shared with the email account associated with your game account.

Here are some quick tips to using a secure password:
•Make sure your password is unique and not used with other games, RIFT related websites, or your email.
•Use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
•Increasing the length and variety of your password can increase security. Shoot for at least 6+ characters.

These attacks are client side and can be indicative of invasive programs being installed without your knowledge. Never click a link that advertises selling (or free) RIFT Platinum or other game currencies and furthermore never click a link that you do not trust. Should you receive an email from Trion or RIFT, the address should only go to riftgame.com, trionworlds.com, or trionworlds.custhelp.com (our support center). To be safe we recommend copying and pasting the link from the email to your browser. Another indicator of a fraudulent email is poor grammar and misspellings. We do our best to write properly.

Should you discover your account has been compromised change your password immediately and contact Customer Support. While we are constantly expanding our CS team and working to respond to appeals as quickly as possible there may still be a significant wait and we are grateful for your patience and understanding while we assist others in queue before you.

We’re constantly working to improve account security and are looking into providing free authenticators you can use on your iPhone and Android phones as well as via text message in the future.

Thank you for your continued vigilance. We are committed to account security and want everyone to enjoy the game and will continue act swiftly against those who seek to disrupt your experience.

Please use this thread to discuss your questions or concerns and help us by passing the information on to your friends and fellow players across the game.

Rift Quests: Sell Your Grey Gear and Sort the Rest

sell your grey items automatically after your Rift quests While you are moving along in Rift, you will pick up a ton of loot. What do you do with it all? How can you easily sell your “grey” things and hold on to your better equipment? How do you know what is junk and what is not?

Like most modern MMORPGs, Rift uses a color-coding system in the online game. Since we are a newbie-friendly site, let’s cover the common basic color code for items. You can tell what is junk, good or great by the color of the title of the item in question.

Grey= junk item or vendor trash. Sell it. Make some coin. When you encounter a Vendor NPC, you can use a button in item display screen to quickly sell all the grey-colored items in your inventory.

White=probably can be used by someone somewhere for something. This includes crafting supplies such as the popular “rotting canine” and some just-better-than-newbie weapons and armor. When you are getting started, replace your grey gear with the white gear you will get as you get quest rewards or find loot on monsters. Keep the crafting materials you need and send the rest on to your bank or auction house mule. A mule is a character that you run up to your main city and park them there to handle banking, mail and the auctions. They are are the servants to your main characters. Rift is not very friendly to much transporting around, so these mule characters will save you tons of game time and frustration.

Green=starting to get to the start of the good stuff. These items have good stats for the item’s intended level. As you get rolling, you want to replace your white-titled items with green-titled items. Send greens you cannot use to your alts that can use them. For example, you are a mage, so send your chain-mail items to your cleric. You will want to have at least one character that can Runebreak (“disenchant”) these green items down to the magical components for your crafting needs.

Blue and Purple=rare items. Your goal is replace all your items with high-level gear such as this. As of this writing at the start of the Rift game launch, we will still need time to determine which of the blues are truly unique and rare and which will be seen more often. Your purple items are higher end items that will be wanted by all truly focused end-gamers. You can also use your Runebreaking skills on these items for rare magical components for the best augmentations.

The higher the Rift quests you take on, the higher the multi-colored rewards will be.

Rift Quests: Flower Power or How to Get Started as a Forager

So, you have made it past the newbie area and now you are in your first mini Rift quests hub of Diving Landing. Here you will pick up your first crafting skills. You can have three skills per character in Rift. There is no best way to choose crafting skills. It is mostly about your play style. It’s also about whether or not you will be leveling alts in the game.

If you are ready to find wood and dive deep into the bush, let us start with foraging for the Guardians. The class calling trainers are standing about and bit east of them are the crafting trainers. Visit the NPC Clive Adar, carry on a brief conversation about “Yes, I really do want to learn this craft, Clive-o” and, boom, you are in. You will see that now you have the ability to find wood and plants. These skills will most likely be placed in your default action bar or they will be in your spell book. Click on both of these and they will appear in your buffs on your screen. Now, plants and logs will show as small, tiny diamonds on your map. See Clive below:
How to get started as a forager crafting skill in Rift.

He will even offer you your first of rift quest dailies: Flower Power. He will have a brief conversation about how dangerous your new craft will be and then wants you to gather some Grieveblossom Petals. Accept his challenge, oh Master (Mistress?) of the bush.
Rift foraging dailies.

The Grieveblossom plants will be throughout the starting area. You will usually find your first plant in the battle space to the right of where you are standing when you face Clive. You will also find plenty if you want to retrace your steps back to where you entered the area- near the drowning soldiers, for example. Like every other quest objective, the wood and plants you need are surrounded by sparkly stuff, as if the plants are huffing pop-rocks or something.
Finding Grieveblossoms.

Gather plants by clicking on them. Bring them back to Clive. Collect your pay and experience. Too easy. Have fun.

In my opinion, this gathering foraging skill is pretty cool. You will save yourself boatloads of plat on healing salves alone. Collect everything you pass. Butchering in Rift is a nice choice to go with this gathering skill.

Rift Quests: A Dim Dark Eye (Starting Area #16)

More Rift Quests from the Guardian Starting Area. Now, we’re looking at “A Dim Dark Eye” which is the final quest to get you out of starting-zone limbo.

In Valor Hold, you can get this quest from Cyril, who offers you the chance to use the horse you just dragged in on the previous quest. Put the Hammer of the Vigil that he gives you into one of your action bar spaces so you can find it at the end. Go ahead and take the horse from the dialogue box. Ride out toward the N/Nw area of camp towards the spot marked on your map.

Oh, noes! When you want go up the hill, you are blocked by loads of evil reds. Have no fear- just go into the light circle and watch them crumble before your Ascended might. Can’t miss it- the big circle of light. Go stand in it. See pic below.

Rift Quest: A Dim Dark Eye (Go stand in the light)

That takes care of your welcoming committee. Now hurry up the hill and you’ll be in your first “rift.” Sort of. If there’s another group going on, just join the public group. If not, you’ll need to activate the columns to either side of the altar by clicking on them. (They are the orange piles in the picture below.) Mayhem ensues. Kill everything.

Rift Quest: A Dim Dark Eye Hammer of the Vigil

More talking, more voices, more waves of mobs. Kill it all. You can probably solo it, but you’ll need a healing pot in the middle, maybe.

After you slay the Shade of Regulos, use your hammer on the dead body. Poof. You’re now free of the starting zone and, after a cut scene, you will be turning in the quest on the other side. Welcome to the jungle, err, the forest. You’ll be off on more rift quests soon.

Rift Game: A Dim Dark Eye (Starting Zone)

Please note that you have ended the war. At level 5. Take some time to flex, mighty guardian.
